What to Say to Someone Who Lost a Pet

Losing a pet — even temporarily — is disorienting and lonely. The right words don't fix it, but they remind someone they aren't searching alone. Here's how to show up.

Start by acknowledging, not fixing

Skip the advice for a moment. Name what's happening and how heavy it feels. That single beat of empathy is often what people remember later.

  • • "I'm so sorry — this is awful. I'm thinking about you and {pet name}."
  • • "I can only imagine how scary this is. I'm here whenever you need to talk or vent."
  • • "There are no right words. Just know I care and I'm not going anywhere."

Offer one specific kind of help

"Let me know if you need anything" puts the work on them. Instead, propose one concrete thing they can accept or decline.

  • • "Can I share your post to my neighborhood group tonight?"
  • • "I can walk the park between 6 and 8 — want me to bring flyers?"
  • • "I'm at the store — dropping off dinner at your door, no need to answer."
  • • "Want me to call the shelters in the east end so you don't have to?"

Message templates you can copy

Text to a close friend

"I just saw about {pet name} and my heart sank. I'm so sorry. I'm free after 5 today and can help search, print flyers, or just sit with you. Which sounds best?"

Card or DM to a neighbor

"Thinking of you and {pet name}. I've shared your post and I'll keep an eye out on my morning walks. Please tell me the moment there's news — good or bad."

In person, when you don't know what to say

"I don't have the right words. I just wanted you to know I'm here, and I'm hoping with you."

What to avoid

  • • Minimizing ("it's just a cat", "you can get another one").
  • • Projecting the worst outcome ("they're probably…"). Follow their lead on hope.
  • • Unsolicited advice about what they should've done differently.
  • • Comparing losses. This moment belongs to them.
